Kitui Governor Dr. Julius Malombe and Water, Sanitation, and Irrigation Cabinet Secretary (CS) Eng. Eric Muriithi Mugaa have reaffirmed their commitment to completing the Umaa Dam project, a key water infrastructure initiative in Kitui County. During a courtesy visit to the Governor’s office, CS Mugaa outlined the government’s determination to ensure the dam is completed by 2027 despite fiscal challenges.
The Umaa Dam project, which has stalled in the past, requires an estimated KSh 1.96 billion to reach completion. CS Mugaa emphasized the government’s strategic focus on completing six major dam projects across the country, including Umaa.

“Our priority is to ensure that Umaa Dam progresses without interruptions. My visit today is aimed at assessing the ongoing work, resolving any challenges, and reaffirming the government’s commitment to this critical project,” CS Mugaa said.
He acknowledged the financial strain currently faced by the country but assured stakeholders that the ministry has allocated sufficient resources to keep construction work on track.

The CS stressed the importance of intergovernmental cooperation for the success of the dam and emphasized a holistic approach to water projects.
Governor Malombe expressed gratitude to the national government for revitalizing the Umaa Dam project, underscoring its potential to alleviate water shortages and improve the livelihoods of Kitui residents.
Once completed, Umaa Dam is expected to significantly improve water supply for domestic, agricultural, and industrial use in Kitui County, a region historically plagued by water scarcity. The project is part of a broader national strategy to enhance water access and sustainability across Kenya.

The meeting between Governor Malombe and CS Mugaa signals a renewed sense of urgency and collaboration in advancing the project. With consistent funding and concerted efforts, the completion of Umaa Dam will mark a major milestone in addressing water challenges and fostering development in Kitui County.
