Preparations for this year’s Madaraka Day celebrations, set for June 1 at Ithookwe Stadium in Kitui, are well underway. A high-level national technical team convened with Governor Dr. Julius Malombe to strategize for the event, ensuring all necessary logistics are in place. The meeting, held in the governor’s boardroom, marked the first formal step in coordinating efforts between the national and county governments.
During the discussions, officials emphasized the importance of having the stadium and its facilities in optimal condition ahead of the celebrations. Governor Malombe reaffirmed his administration’s dedication to working collaboratively with the national government, citing the constitutional principle that national and county governments are distinct but interdependent, requiring mutual consultation and cooperation.
Expressing his gratitude, Governor Malombe recalled his request to President William Ruto in February 2023 to host a national event in Kitui. He made the appeal during the launch of a hospital at Kanyonyoo Border Police Unit and lauded the president’s decision to grant Kitui the honor of hosting this year’s Madaraka Day. He assured stakeholders of the county’s full commitment to delivering a successful event.
The national delegation was led by Kodeck Makosi from the State Department of Interior and National Administration, alongside Regional Commissioner for Eastern Region Paul Rotich and County Commissioner Kipchumba Rutto. Their engagement with county officials signals a concerted effort to ensure the event’s smooth execution, reinforcing Kitui’s place in national celebrations.
