Kitui South rogue MP Dr. Rachel Nyamai is under fire after allegedly ordering the arrest of Kitui-based journalist Emanuel Maleve, sparking public outrage and political tension just days before President William Ruto’s expected visit to the Ukambani region.
The incident has drawn sharp criticism from various quarters, with leaders accusing the MP of casting the government in a negative light at a critical moment.
“It is a deliberate choice to taint the government’s image when the president is about to visit Ukambani,” said a local leader who requested anonymity. “Such actions by those claiming to be part of the government only serve to increase public hostility toward the administration.”

Critics claim the move was a calculated attempt to silence dissenting voices and distract from real issues affecting residents. They argue that instead of uniting the region ahead of the high-profile visit, the MP’s actions are setting a negative agenda and stirring unnecessary controversy.
Emanuel Maleve, a well-known journalist in the region, was reportedly arrested under unclear circumstances, raising concerns over press freedom and political intimidation in Kitui County.
Calls are growing for the government to intervene, with civil society organizations and media rights groups urging for Maleve’s immediate release and an investigation into the arrest.
President Ruto is expected to visit Kitui in the coming days as part of his ongoing development tour across the region.
