Speaking at Port Reitz Hospital after signing the executive order, Governor Nassir emphasized the urgent need to address the addiction crisis fueled by the stimulant.

“Muguka is the leading cause of addiction in our region,” Nassir stated. “Many young people will continue wasting away if we do not take such drastic steps.”

The decision to ban Muguka comes amid growing concerns over its widespread use, particularly among the youth. Health officials in Mombasa have reported a surge in addiction cases linked to the stimulant, which has been associated with various health problems, including mental health disorders and cardiovascular issues.

Governor Nassir highlighted the broader social implications of Muguka consumption, noting its impact on education and employment. “Our youth are neglecting their studies and jobs because of their addiction to Muguka,” he said. “This is not just a health issue but a socio-economic one that affects the entire community.”

In response to concerns about the immediate impact of the ban on those already addicted, Nassir announced that the County Government would provide free rehabilitation and treatment services. “We will offer support at various health facilities in the county to help those affected by this decision,” he assured. “Our goal is to ensure they receive the care and support they need to overcome their addiction.”

The Governor’s announcement has sparked a mixed reaction among residents. While many health advocates and community leaders have applauded the move, some Muguka traders have expressed concern over the potential loss of livelihood. Nassir acknowledged these concerns and reiterated the County Government’s commitment to providing alternative economic opportunities for those impacted by the ban.

Law enforcement agencies in Mombasa are set to enforce the ban rigorously to prevent the entry and distribution of Muguka.
