Drama erupted in the Kitui County Assembly this morning as Speaker Kinengo fiercely resisted leadership changes initiated by the Wiper Party. The changes, which saw a new majority leadership elected, were officially communicated to the speaker, who was expected to announce them. However, Kinengo, determined to protect his close allies who had been ousted, refused to acknowledge the changes. This defiance led to chaos inside the assembly, where blows and kicks were exchanged, leaving a sergeant-at-arms with missing teeth. Matinyani MCA Sylvester Munyalo, famously known as Yaamu, was forcefully ejected but defiantly scaled the assembly wall to re-enter, prompting the speaker to hurriedly postpone the sitting until the afternoon.
Despite Kinengo’s resistance, he found himself on the losing side, with only 21 MCAs backing him against a formidable 39 from the majority side. His alleged attempts to derail the process by lacking quorum failed, as the determined MCAs vowed to push through the leadership changes. The atmosphere remains tense, with both sides preparing for a decisive showdown in the next session. The majority MCAs have made it clear that they will not be silenced by intimidation or manipulation.
In a desperate move, Speaker Kinengo is reportedly considering sending the assembly on a two-week recess to buy time and attempt to bribe more MCAs to his side. However, this strategy appears to be his last stand, as the majority MCAs have declared their unwavering commitment to upholding the party’s decision. They insist that neither money nor alleged supernatural influence will deter them from ensuring that the will of the majority prevails. Kinengo’s grip on power is slipping, and his opponents are prepared to fight to the end.
