Kitui Governor Dr. Julius Malombe today commissioned the Ikutha Gender-Based Violence Rescue Centre, a facility constructed by the County Government of Kitui to enhance support for survivors of gender-based violence in the county. The commissioning ceremony marked a significant milestone in the county’s efforts to strengthen protection systems and create safer spaces for vulnerable members of the community. The governor was accompanied by Ikutha MCA Hussein Mwandia, members of the county executive, and other technical officers.

Speaking during the event, Governor Malombe noted that the rescue centre will provide a safe haven for survivors of gender-based violence through temporary shelter, psychosocial support, counselling services, and linkage to healthcare and other essential support systems. He emphasized the county government’s commitment to ensuring that survivors are treated with dignity while receiving the care and protection necessary to help them recover and rebuild their lives.

The newly commissioned facility is expected to strengthen Kitui County’s response to gender-based violence by improving access to integrated support services for affected individuals. County officials reiterated that the establishment of the centre reflects the administration’s continued focus on safeguarding human rights, promoting social justice, and addressing the growing need for structured interventions to combat gender-based violence across the county. The event took place on Friday, July 3, 2026.
