Machakos County has been plunged into political paralysis as Speaker Anne Kiusya faces mounting pressure from residents, activists, and local leaders who are demanding her immediate resignation. The crisis erupted following her controversial decision on April 8, 2025, to indefinitely suspend assembly business—an act widely viewed as a desperate ploy to block an impending impeachment motion against her. Outraged Machakos residents have labeled her actions “reckless” and “self-serving,” accusing her of holding the legislative arm hostage to cling to power while vital county operations grind to a halt.

For nearly a month, the Machakos County Assembly has remained inactive, exacerbating frustrations among citizens who see the speaker’s maneuver as an abuse of authority and betrayal of public trust. Critics argue that Speaker Kiusya’s suspension of the House is a blatant violation of the Constitution and a dereliction of her duty to facilitate democratic processes. They are now calling on Members of County Assembly (MCAs) to reconvene urgently, and push for the lift of the house suspension, and proceed with impeachment proceedings to restore constitutional order and service delivery.
Beyond procedural concerns, Speaker Kiusya is being accused of undermining Governor Wavinya Ndeti’s development agenda by blocking critical operations, including the passage of a supplementary budget. Allegations have surfaced that Kiusya is colluding with political adversaries of devolution to sabotage the county’s progress. Ironically, her rise to the Speaker’s seat was propelled by Governor Ndeti’s endorsement and Wiper party support—factions she is now allegedly purging from key committee roles in favor of allies linked to former Governor Alfred Mutua to pay them for helping her advance her megalomaniac interests.

The residents’ anger has reached a boiling point, with many asserting that even legal interventions cannot shield Kiusya from accountability. They insist her impeachment is inevitable, as the majority of MCAs, who feel betrayed by her autocratic leadership and political machinations, now hold the key to her fate. The people of Machakos are demanding not only her exit but also a restoration of dignity and transparency in the County Assembly, lest governance in the region collapses under the weight of unchecked ambition.
